As a child with a knack for languages growing up in a largely bilingual environment, she also achieved native proficiency in English. Carlota completed a Bachelor’s degree in European Languages at the University of the Philippines in Manila and then went directly into teaching French and Spanish at that same institution for several years. She continued teaching languages at a number of private institutions in Manila and also conducted one-on-one tutoring for high-profile clients such as the Japanese ambassador to the Philippines before co-founding and co-directing Lumen et Lingua, a private language institute. From there she moved to France to study advanced translation at the Center for Applied Linguistics (CLA) at the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon, France. While completing her degree at the CLA, she began doing freelance translation and private tutoring as well as teaching English classes for graduate students at the University of Franche-Comté. She went on to earn a master’s-level maîtrise in foreign languages with a concentration in English linguistics at the University of Franche-Comté. Her thesis, entitled “A Sociolinguistic Profile of Multilingualism: the Philippine Model”, is still on the library shelves at the University. Some time later, Carlota relocated to the United States where she has continued her work in languages, including at various times teaching French at the University of California at Redlands and a private college preparatory academy, and doing freelance translation, editing, and interpretation primarily between English and Tagalog. BRADFORD TERRY Brad’s proclivity for language arts was evident early: he began learning French at age 6 and he won a variety of accolades for his writing skills in English throughout his school years. He continued studying French in college while at the same time working at a professional radio station where, among other things, he wrote and produced several award-winning commercials. Having spent six months in France during college, Brad returned to that country a few years later to study advanced translation at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Besançon. He began to work as a freelance translator while still studying for his translation degree, handling a wide range of document types. He was soon invited to join TRAJE Traduction Interprétation, a local association of independent translators. At the same time, he also started teaching conversational and technical English classes for undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Franche-Comté and a local vocational center. He shortly became a full partner in TRAJE and accepted the role of principal translator in English for that agency, while continuing to translate for his own client base. Upon his return to the United States, Brad became involved in electronic academic publishing. Starting as an editor, he was quickly promoted to manager of the journals department for the IEEE Computer Society. He was then solicited to manage the Electronic Production Department for Academic Press, a small publisher owned by Harcourt, Inc. When Harcourt was sold to a European publishing conglomerate, and the American companies were dissolved, Brad decided to leave corporate publishing to return to the language services industry. In the fall of 2004, Brad and Carlota founded Eclectic Stew Language Services and since then have been working on a wide range of language projects for a diverse and growing client base. RATES Our rates are very competitive within the industry. Translation is billed at a fixed rate per source word. All other services are billed by the hour. The specific rate for a given project is determined by a number of factors which, depending on the service provided, may include total word count, difficulty or quality of the text or source material, and deadline. Other factors (such as special project requirements like unusual or multiple input or output formats and so on) may affect the rate or total cost of a project. Discounts may be available for high-volume projects or regular customers. We would be happy to give you a free, detailed estimate for your specific project – please contact us at LanguageServices@EclecticStew.com. Guaranteed reply in 24 hours, usually much less. PLEASE NOTE: Minimum fee: $35.00. Monolingual Proofreading rate assumes the text was reasonably well written by a native or near-native speaker. At our discretion, material requiring extensive correction or modification for register or style will be billed at the “Editing” rate. Extended projects may require partial billing at intervals. Noncommercial customers may be asked to prepay part or all of the estimated fee. All other payments are assumed to be Net 30 unless otherwise agreed in advance.
